Athens—a city where ancient history meets vibrant modern life. On our recent trip to Greece, we found ourselves with a day to explore this historic city en route to the idyllic island of Milos. Little did we know that 24 hours in Athens would leave such a lasting impression on us.
Athens is one of the world's oldest cities, with a recorded history spanning over 3,400 years. Often referred to as the cradle of Western civilisation, it was the heart of Ancient Greece—a powerful civilisation that made groundbreaking contributions to art, philosophy, and governance.
Named after Athena, the goddess of wisdom and war, the city is said to have gained her favour when she gifted the olive tree to its people. Athens is the birthplace of democracy, where concepts of citizen participation and public discourse first took root. Walking its ancient streets, you can almost hear the echoes of great thinkers like Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle, whose ideas continue to shape our world today.
Walking through Athens feels like stepping into a living museum. The iconic Acropolis rises majestically above the city, a constant reminder of Greece's illustrious past.
But Athens is more than its ancient monuments. The charming neighbourhoods of Plaka and Monastiraki buzz with energy. Narrow, winding streets lined with neoclassical buildings lead you to hidden cafés, artisan shops, and lively squares where locals and visitors mingle.
One of the highlights of our Greek adventure was undoubtedly the food. From traditional tavernas serving up hearty moussaka and succulent souvlaki to modern eateries putting a fresh spin on classic dishes, the city's culinary scene is a feast for the senses.
Athens seamlessly blends its rich history with contemporary culture. Street art adorns the walls of up-and-coming neighbourhoods, while rooftop bars offer stunning views of ancient landmarks set against a modern skyline. The city's vibrant nightlife, burgeoning arts scene, and welcoming atmosphere make it a place where everyone can find something to love.
